DPI official may face charges INDIANAPOLIS A misdemeanor charge of official misconduct should be brought against a Department of Public Instruction official for allegedly arranging erasures of motor vehicle records in exchange for money, a Marion County grand jury has recommended.

The jury is investigating incidents in which motorists paid to have someone in the Bureau of Motor Vehicles delete offenses from their driving records, officials said. The panel Tuesday accused Raymond A. Slaby, associate director of the state Department of Public Instruction, of receiving $100 from George E. Cannon, a former department employee, allegedly in exchange for having someone from the Department of Motor Vehicles erase two traffic tickets from Cannon's record. Dr.

Harold H. Negley, state superintendent of public instruction, said Slaby will not be suspended. Negley said the charge is a misdemeanor and Slaby is "the kind of guy who, if a friend needed a favor, he would do it." Negley said Slaby and Cannon were friends and were once roommates. The grand jury also indicted Roy A. Walker on charges of bribery and conspiracy for allegedly taking $300 from Ronald L.

Ballet star to dance for freedom BLOOMINGTON Ballet star Patrick Bissell has decided he will dance for free and his freedom. Bissell, 24, a performer with the American Ballet Theater, was ordered in March 1981 to perform in Bloomingon for charity within a year of his Monroe Superior Court misdemeanor conviction. He was arrested after an altercation with campus police at the IU Memorial Union where he was staying after performing "Swan Lake" at IU, authorities said.

Judge Marc Kellams also fined the dancer $100 plus court costs. When Bissell hadn't arranged a benefit performance by last Wednesday, Monroe County Probation Officer Victoria Phevenow filed a petition with the court asking Kellams to revoke suspension of the 30-day jail term he imposed. At that point, Bissell's agent, Alex Dube, called from New York to arrange a performance, Phevenow said. Arrangements were finalized Sunday for a performance at 8 p.m. June 23.

Re-arraignment on the suspended sentence is set for June 24. Kellams said Monday that even though the time had expired, "the defendant is at this point making arrangements with the School of Music to satisfy the requirements of the suspended sentence. If he does, the petition to revoke the suspended sentence would most likely be dismissed."
