Getting Ready for the Holidays

Ready or not – the holiday season is upon us. On Saturday, we strolled through our famous International Christmas Market here in town. It was so perfect. The holidays often seem to pop up without notice. My husband’s workplace also had their Employee Appreciation Party (a.k.a. Christmas Party) that night.

Although mid-November might seem a little early for Christmas festivities, we are already in the swing of all things Christmas. To be honest, I don’t even mind. I love the Christmas season. And it feels great to just let it happen and accept the tinsel and Mariah Carey repeats in the supermarket.

That said, I’m not so much into the consumerism and stress of gift buying, but I love the tunes, the joyful anticipation and preparation of getting together with family, cuddling up on the couch while watching the snowflakes coming down, warming up in front of fireplaces, and…

Christmas Goodness with Golden Gingerbread Oreos

…of course Christmas Baking! My earliest Christmas and baking memories include my mom preparing German Lebkuchen, which are very similar to gingerbread cookies. It is a very involved recipe that requires the dough to chill overnight – preferably outside in the frost (I am wondering if this recipe comes from times with limited refrigeration options?).

Well, luckily not all gingerbread treats take that much effort. These Gingerbread Oreo Cookie Balls don’t even require baking. I changed up the classic recipe and made them with golden Gingerbread Oreos which I found on display in the aisles of my local Walmart.

Once I came across the cookies I picked up a few more ingredients to make my holiday-flavored treat.

I wanted not just the inside but also the chocolate shell of this treat to taste and look like gingerbread. So I mixed white candy wafers with a few semi-sweet chocolate chips to get the light-brown color. For flavor, I added homemade gingerbread spice to the melted chocolate.

Making Your Own Gingerbread Spice

Gingerbread spice is a very customizable mix. I looked up a bunch of recipes and came up with my own combination of ground spices that I had at home: 2 tablespoons cinnamon, 2 teaspoon cloves, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, ½ teaspoon coriander, ½ teaspoon cardamom, ½ teaspoon allspice, ¼ teaspoon finely ground black pepper and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg.

To recreate the look of white icing on gingerbread men, I drizzled a little melted white chocolate on the dipped gingerbread truffles and attached gingerbread man candy decorations onto each treat.

How to Make Gingerbread Oreo Cookie Balls

To make this gingerbread truffle recipe, you begin by combining finely crushed Oreo cookies with softened cream cheese. Then you divided them into 48 balls and freeze them until set, about 10 minutes.

You can crush the Oreos by hand. Add the cookies to a sealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin. However, a food processor makes this much easier. In this instance, you can place the Oreos in the bowl of a food processor and pulse them until they are finely crushed.

Now combine the cookie crumbs with softened cream cheese until a uniform mixture forms. Shape the cookie dough mix into 1-inch balls and chill them to set.

The next step is to melt the white chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate together, ensuring that you reserve some white chocolate to melt for garnish. You can do this over a double boiler or in the microwave until smooth. Then, you mix the gingerbread spice mix into the chocolate until smooth.

Next, dip the truffles in the melted chocolate (a fork is a great tool here), place them on a wax paper lined cookie sheet and drizzle them with melted white chocolate for garnish. Then, you can garnish them with a gingerbread man decoration or some of your favourite sprinkles as an alternative before putting them in the fridge for 1 hour before they are set. Alternatively, if you would like them to set faster, you can put them in the freezer as well.

Versatility At Its Finest With No-Bake Treats!

I love how creative you can get with Oreo Cookie Balls and make fantastic no-bake treats. All the different varieties of Oreos and cream cheese open up a world of flavor combinations. And then there are all the different ways you can decorate them.

And now for the recipe. The OFFICIAL OREO COOKIE BALL RECIPEreads as follows:

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 pkg (8 oz.) brick cream cheese, softened
    • 36 OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 3 cups)
    • 4 pkg. (4 oz. each) semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted
  • Make it!
    • MIX cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended.
    • SHAPE into 48 (1-inch) balls. Freeze 10 min. Dip balls in melted chocolate; place in single layer in shallow waxed paper-lined pan.
    • CUSTOMIZE it with your own ingredient additions or decorative skills.
    • REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm.
  • Share and enjoy!

Note:

1. If you don't have the limited edition Gingerbread Oreos available, you can use Golden Oreos and add a couple teaspoons of gingerbread spice when combining the cookie crumbs with the cream cheese. Or use any other type of store-bought gingerbread flavored cookies.

2. Apparently Wilton makes Gingerbread Candy Melts. If you can get your hands on those, you can skip the step of mixing white and semi-sweet chocolate with gingerbread spice.

How do you keep Oreo balls from cracking?

To prevent Oreo balls from cracking, it's essential to handle them gently. Additionally, make sure the chocolate coating is smooth and not too thick. Tap off any excess coating before placing the balls on the wax paper. Chilling them thoroughly can also help them set without cracking.

I do! In fact, I've started using it in my cookie crusts for pies. It's so tasty! I haven't seen a gingerbread oreo yet so I'm not certain they're vegan. I'll have to check them out. 🙂

It says Limited Edition on my package and I am in Canada. But I think I have seen an US food blogger post about gingerbread oreos last year as well. Not sure what to look for to identify if they are vegan, but I still really like your idea for homemade golden oreos. Will have to look for the recipe 🙂
