Found this on Craigslist, 4 miles down the road. Missed out on a motorcycle which was sold while I was on my way to pick up a U-Haul trailer. Was going to treat myself for paying off the house on Friday with some of the BAT LE proceeds. :)

Anyway called on this 10 minutes after it was listed. 60% of the car has been repainted. Drivers front fender replaced (no vin) and while the paint isn't perfect it's quite presentable. Seller didn't do much to clean it up and my lowball offer was because of this. Seller countered a couple times and in the end we held on our initial offer and they finally gave in.

Summary: 92' B pkg w/ air condition, limited slip diff, 94 solid 7 spokes. Borla exhaust, (early?) Sebring Supercharger, NACA headlight duct, Eibach Springs, Adjustable Konis. No rust, replacement top in OK shape. Aftermarket CD. Overall happy with the purchase.

A miss under boost was cured with new plugs and wires this evening. Can't believe how the supercharger transforms the 1.6L and how much better the Eibach/Koni combo rides compared to my 93 LEs. The torque right off the line is addictive. Don't know much about the SC, beyond a sticker under the hood. "GP Products Atlanta GA" Seller still has to dig out some of the OEM parts they have buried somewhere, but they're about 4 miles down the road, so we'll get them eventually. Anyway here she is. :) Good thing is with the repaint and a few imperfections I wasn't upset when my 2 yr old climbed all over the car today while he 'helped' me fix a few minor issues.

No, I should clarify. That's the classified ad from some years ago, that was in the glovebox. When it had 50k fewer miles. I think that's when original owner sold it.

That is a VERY early unit. Cone shaped pulley plus that underhood sticker. Throw a crank overlay on there along with some kind of simple timing control and you could really wake it up.

Fixed the glovebox door and replaced the center armrest lid (lid was cracked). Got the aftermarket radio working. Want to pull the driver's seat and put the gas and trunk release back to their original location. One of the POs relocated it to beneath and to the side of the driver's seat.

Got the car fully waxed this evening. Despite some flaws in the paint she cleaned up nicely. :)

Nice score. I paid significantly more than that for my 1992, with higher miles and without supercharger. I put that in later.

That radiator looks like it's had it; I would replace ASAP. About the only way you can kill these 1.6L motors is by overheating.

12th June 2017, 20:31

You stole it!

I'd encourage you to drop an intercooler in there; I expect you'll find a nice bump in power when running when heat-soaked.

Congrats!

Schroedinger

With regard to the comments on additional power- it's a very slippery slope, do your reading. Each additional power step comes with compromises that require more work. Stock injectors are at their limit around 6psi, so crank overlay pulley requires new injectors. Which may require aftermarket ECU depending on how big the injectors are. Also makes more heat, so you add an intercooler. Which requires lots of piping and throttled air volume, which leads to idle droop. Which leads to dual throttle bodies, etc.
My opinion is that a 1.6L with an M45 and not much else makes a nice amount of power in a reliable, easy setup.

Schroedinger I agree, I like it simple. If there is one mod I'd do, it's a ddmworks intake with shroud. But beyond that I'd rather keep it at modest, reliable, simple levels of boost and complexity.

Didn't notice an AFM meter (wideband), you should get one and a FFS fuel card to replace that RRFPR, makes a big difference and ensures you're not pig rich on tip-in or too lean. Don't mess with overlay pulley and you shouldn't need a timing card. You should able to run 10 BTDC safely w/o a timing card. Can you get 93 octane? Even better if so.
Great buy, you stole it! Boost is addictive.

I've been looking for a nice boosted NA Miata & find nothing but half ass junk & you stumble on this steal? mfer lol

CincyCaddy probably was searching the classifieds night and day...doubt that counts as "stumbling" onto a deal. :)

Started using Craigslist search alerts, directly through Craigslist. Contacted seller right when I got the alert. Asking price was $3500. We had a couple things going as we were first to call, 4 miles away, cash in hand and seller was about to hop on a plane to fly back home. She had left the car at her parents when she moved and finally decided to sell on a whim while in town for the weekend. Hence the lackluster appearance of the car when we looked it over.

Craigslist search alerts are where it's at. It helped me avoid looking at cars that were out of my price range and waiting for the right one to come around.

Congrats on the new ride!

Picked up a new radiator and purchased a set of reproduction R Spoilers to round out the look of the R deck spoiler. Will report back with photos and feedback on fit/finish.

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/2HMAAOSwq~tZPwwq/s-l1600.jpg

Got in touch with the 2nd owner. found out it's on stock springs and Koni shocks - not the Eibachs that I thought were on there (haven't really looked under the car). Also noted that the girl I bought it off of didn't know how to drive a stick when he sold it to her. Seller's Dad
who has stored and driven it the last 4 yrs did note it had a new heavy duty clutch on it - no paperwork though but no reason to doubt the old man.

I'm still amazed how much more fun this low tech SC setup is though.

The LE was just too nice for us to use. Always worried about something bumping into it in the garage, parking lot, etc. With this 92 though it's got just enough bumps and bruises and high enough miles that if something happens it's no big deal. Plus with what we paid we can drive it for a while, put some miles on it and sell it and still be in the black.

So I guess I'm more anal retentive than I'd like to admit, but there was an unused alarm LED in the center console that's been driving me nuts since we brought her home last Sunday.

So I found a nice aluminum 5 speed pattern emblem over on Revlimiter - dug into my parts stash and dragged out the console from an LE I parted out years ago. It too had an alarm led but it was next to the shifter. Removed the LED and put the 5 speed emblem down - works with the shift knob that was on the car that was not embossed.

Also replaced all the mismatched screws that were holding the console down - they all went missing over the years. OEM Mazda screws to the rescue.

The reproduction R Package spoilers also arrived tonight. The fit and finish is pretty good - I'm sure they aren't as nice as original OEM but for $79 shipped for the pair I don't think most anybody will be the wiser. Only issue was the lower bolts on the bumper support bracket snapped off, so we'll need to source those and replace them. But beyond that I'm happy with the 94 R tribute with the R spoilers and 94 7 spoke wheels.

This x10. Replace that AFPR with an adjustable Powercard as soon as you are comfortable, and check your cat for plugging.

Please, please paint the rockers black - it ruins the whole stance of the car being body colored and it's just Krylon semi enamel and about an hour of time to tape and mask everything off. Now, run, fast, keep the mask on and hope the police don't have a good description of the guy that stole the Miata :)

I have an extra Mazda front bumper decal I would be happy to give you. You can take a look at how it looks on my BRG and decide if you want it. Car looks great BTW.
Kevin thanks, ordered one already though. I'll get over there to see the brg one of these days.

All for now. :)

Shoot me a PM about the fasteners you need.

And... insert whatever 'nice car/nice find' comments (or reread the ones I've already posted, you lucky punk). I must admit that I dig that little scooter, and I'm very curious to get a little better look at that BMW you have tucked away back there. I love those old Bimmers.

To get a little further off topic, have you seen the Petrolicious films of the BMW bikes? Good, good stuff.

MC70 - Lip spoilers came with hardware - not all the clips of the OEM spoiler but all the nuts and bolts. I do need the lower bumper brackets though.

OT on the bikes:

The scoot is a 1979 Vespa P200E - had sold off all my Honda Cubs (1964 CT200, 1965 C100 & 1966 CM91) and stumbled upon this 750 mile scoot. A few bruises here and there but brought it home with the wife 8 mos pregnant. Converted to PX150 European look with PX lens, headlight, fuel petco*ck. Threw on whitewalls, a ton of chrome and made a custom headset with LED indicators and digital speedo. Fun little scoot.

The BMW is a 1973 R75/5 that's mildly cafe'd. Been restoring it for a buddy of mine who is in London. Been a project that's been going on for a few years, less motivation since I'm doing it for free and it's not my bike. Complete tear down to the frame, powercoated and stripping off all the rattle can paint off the engine. Not a huge fan of the bike. Heavy, low end grunt but I much prefer my Hondas.

Speaking of which is a 1964 Honda C200, 90cc I picked up off of Craigslist for $320. Looked like a basket case but all the parts were there. Put about 35 miles on it so far - but I think I've got low compression and will probably need to rebuild the top end. That or I'm contemlating putting a bigger Lifan engine in it, we shall see.

Hey nice find Chris!

I've been driving my 1.6 S/C, Gen1 Downing / Atlanta Eaton M45 like you have there, ancient round nose and all since June 2000 and have only been slightly tempted to turn up the boost with pulley mods. Intercooler is not necessary at JRSC boost levels. You will get more reward from just optimizing your setup and getting it to run the way its supposed to in the first place.

I'm happy with mine with stock pullies, but then again I don't have any Miata friends locally so no matter where I go, I'm the fastest Miata there. At any cars and coffee over the past five years I've only run across one other supercharged Miata, and now with the M45 out of production I can entertain myself by saying they are rare. Its true I would have most likely ditched this setup years ago if I had even 1 or 2 pals with Miatas equipped with an FM turbo setup, but that's never happened. So on my little island of positive displacement boost I remain completely satisfied.

People say a lot about these little blowers, mostly negative and compared to what you can get with a modern turbo setup they are mostly correct. But I think most of the complaints found about these little blowers are due to the installation and not the blower. I spent years lurking before buying mine, years more collecting info before finally purchasing obsolete upgrades, and took my time installing and tuning it and it runs like it was installed by the factory. I now have a completely obsolete and well tuned setup. Its quick but surely not fast, its main benefit is it makes the Miata totally drivable and if you pair it with a Torsen rear end you can exit corners at an autocross with real authority.

For this message I had to get out The Book, a 1-1/2" thick binder with my mod history and records, installation manuals, instructions, receipts etc. I started keeping this just for grins from the start but man, has it been handy as time went on

http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo328/71gearhead/the%20book_zpsjjoxeyjf.jpg (http://s388.photobucket.com/user/71gearhead/media/the%20book_zpsjjoxeyjf.jpg.html)

I did make some minor upgrades that have some effect on the charger - in this order over the years - that mainly improve the basic functions.

- J&S knock sensor ignition timing controller with remote display. I think this is an obsolete item, but mine works as well as the day I put it in. This listens for knock and retards the ignition timing cylinder by cylinder to prevent detonation from either clumsy tuning or bad gas. This is an "active ignition control" for detonation control there are several solutions out there for this.

- Cold air intake of my own design. Combined with the knock sensor this has big benefits I saw 8hp increase on the dyno between what the cold air was doing by itself and how the knock sensor pulled out less timing due to the cold air. There are kits available today.

- larger Jackson Racing blower exit manifold, the high-flow version for the 1.8. I had to cut my hood bracing to fit this. I don't know of too many other people that fit this to the 1.6. I can see how this would increase flow and reduce temps, but by very little I imagine.

- 4.30:1 Torsen type II differential out of a 99

- Track Dog Racing belt tensioner. This is just a nice way to do things and helps take some of the madness out of aligning the blower and getting rid of belt dust and premature belt failure.

- FM hi-flow cat. Old one plugged up with the mechanical AFPR but it took 12 years to do this.

- Powercard Pro (adjustable) bought this from Tom at FFS with a Moss part number on it P/N 052-423, MP62 Miata 90-93 FG P/N 9241003.

- Centerforce dual friction clutch. The stock clutch lasted 22k miles behind the blower.

- For fun, a Borla Dual Sport muffler with the Borla midpipe. This muffler is loud, deep, unruly and hated by many a spouse behind a normally aspirated motor. Put it behind a blower and its even better. Its also out of production.

- I spent time shimming my blower to make my pulley run on center on the Track Dog tensioner idlers. I have zero belt dust. My last belt was good for 15 years and 30K miles.

- Stock flywheel, never tempted to swap that out for a light one due to all the noise and rattles reported by those that do.

With what I have and stock pullies I see 7-8psi. Most folks report 5-6 psi.

Here's what you want to do, in my opinion. Get that car running well with what it has and just learn what it can do.

Get some kind of air/fuel gauge so you can see what is going on with your mixture if only for engine safety.

Your mechanical AFPR is not your friend. When I finally replaced mine with a programmable Powercard, spurred on by the plugged cat I found due to running rich and lots of soot, it made the driving experience new again. It solved the additional fueling issue so uniformly the car was not only making better, smoother power everywhere in the rev range it also changed the exhaust note. Don't get me wrong its still a Band-Aid and not a programmable ECU but the mechanical AFPR is horrible.

Here's a pic of my setup with the chunky hi-flow blower outlet manifold. The dual catch cans do catch oil and bring some results but were mostly just for a fun project

http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo328/71gearhead/IMG_2060_zps8836d727.jpg (http://s388.photobucket.com/user/71gearhead/media/IMG_2060_zps8836d727.jpg.html)

The intake above is pulling air through a snorkel that goes through the firewall into the cowl area. Somebody makes something like this that you can buy and I would recommend it. The rotors on my blower have no scoring or scratching whatsoever and I think its because they have always been fed cold air. Aluminum has a thermal expansion rate that's significantly larger than steel and keeping these rotors cool has probably helped keep their edges out of the case.

Your car is great especially for the price forget any haters you run across have fun

Mike

MC70 - I actually tried to buy a CB160, similar to the one in that Petrolicious video, last week. Wife wasn't feeling as enthusiastic about it as I was. This was after I bought the red Miata and the 64 Honda, one each of the two previous Sundays. :)

71bacon - wow thanks for the comprehensive response.

I've gotta decide how far down the rabbit hole we want to go. On one hand the Supercharger has probably been on the car for 15-20 yrs, in stock form. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. On the other hand though I would like to do some simple improvements if they don't break the bank.

I think I'm leaning towards a Power Card, wideband AFR and a boost gauge. With the exception of having the bunge for the O2 sensor welded in it should be a simple install and in the $500-$600 range. I guess then it's just a matter of wiring up the Power Card and ditching the old AFPR.

Any advantage of using something like the FM Voodoo box over the Powercard? Looks like they are similar with the exception of the Voodoo having input for the wideband O2.

Thanks,

Chris.

Chris, I think you are correct in your plans, from everything I've seen the M45 is very reliable and a barrel of fun at 5-7 psi. Problems seem to arise when one adds boost with pullies, overlays, intercoolers, etc. One additional item you may consider is a check valve in return air line (TDR sells one and has details on their website).
Don't know about the Vodoo box but you can't go wrong with the programmable cards; my throttle response is instantaneous and AFR is ideal all the way through the powerband. My local muffler shop charged me $40 to weld in a bung. If you get the PC, the boomslang harness makes the job much easier.
There are better ways to make more power, I'd love to have a FFS but competing hobbies require ration of "toy" funds and buying a well sorted M45 like you have is a great start. You got the entire car for half price of an FFS system.
Enjoy the journey, I'll never go back.

I'd sooner go with a Megasquirt than a power card. While the powercards seem to work well enough, if they're running lean or rich there isn't much to be done about it. Megasquirt allows you to optimize your settings, which makes a good bit of difference. It isn't without frustration though, and yes, it will cost more. You can poke around on the last few pages of my build to see where I had mine installed and I talk a little about tuning. In fact, maybe that's a good subject for a little 'blogging' in the thread tonight.

MC70 - Thanks, I'll have to read up on the MS. But unless I can find a used one on the low low, I think it will be cost prohibitive.

We put the Mazda back in Miata tonight. Previous owner removed the Mazda emblem and moved the Miata to that location. In lieu of removing the Miata emblem and having paint issues underneath I just put the Mazda Emblem on the left and plastic welded it in place.

It depends on what Chris is looking for; a MS will get you more power, but at what cost in time and tinkering with maps? For me the MS route involved too much set up, I wanted a Plug and Play. Replaced my fuel management resistor with an older non-programmable JRSC card that wasn't much better, got a FFS card and harness and it worked perfectly with initial install after a 10 minute conversation with Tom who suggested tweaking the setting by one light. Ideal AFRs through all conditions. I'm very happy, having not the time or patience for tuning a MS for maybe IDK, 10whp? For me also, the MS would create CARB issues every two years come smog time.

MC70 - Read through your thread - impressive. Looks like you just recently decided to go the MS route? The more I read the more I think I'm leaning towards the TDR/FFS/JRSC route. How has your experience been with it, do you have it up and running?

I don't disagree with any of what you said here. The MS just gives you the ability to fine tune things. It also allows you to have various tunes at the ready for different situations. I see that as an advantage, and given that a lot of piggyback systems are around $400-500 it just stopped being a question for me. I knew I wanted a boost gauge and an AFR anyway so the total delta was about $300. That isn't chump change but I expected that the better control and versatility (and user support) would make up for that. And over the years I expect I won't miss that extra money.

Chris

I made the decision to go to MS after I finally decided to buy all the instrumentation and do the dash swap. I had discovered that the Kraftwerks piggyback tended to run lean (the NB that the kit was on before seized due to this) and I figured a TDR system was in order. I priced that and a couple others and they fell within a near enough cost that the difference was negligible. I weighed the benefits and decided that it was the best option.

I daily drive it. Now that I have a good working tune it is pretty much excellent. There are still some niggles but I blame my ignorance for those (hot start is finicky at present and if I'm at zero throttle when the AC kicks on it wants to stall the engine... probably not an issue with a heavier flywheel). Is it worth the downsides? In my OPINION, yes. At least it has been so far.

Cars looking pretty good.

I thought about megasquirt hard, for about two years. I read so many threads not about people making power, that seemed to be no problem, but about the challenges of trying to develop maps to start and run the car in normal everyday conditions. I will wait until I have a lot of time on my hands for that mod.

Well I took my first step towards adding a bit of intelligence to the SC setup. While I understand the Bipes is old school, I appreciate it's simplicity - purchased today, brand new off eBay for about half of retail. Now to choose a fuel card.

Exactly the same for me. How much more hp can one wring out of a MS, keeping it reliable?

Well I ordered the FFS Fuel card and patch harness from Tom @ FFS. I respect the customization possibilities of the MS but prefer the simplicity of the piggyback systems. Emailed FFS, TDR & FM with questions and he was the one and only to respond, plus after doing some research on the forum it seems Tom has gone out if his way for others who have the FFS products.

Thats an impossible to answer question without identifying a few different parameters. The short answer is 'plenty enough to justify' if you are truly seeking HP. People spend over $600 on an exhaust system and another $200 on an intake that'll net you about 0 HP. Yet won't spend $300 on a MS and $150 on an AFM to gain at least 15HP. That number jumps with boost, and if you tune well you get more HP, better economy, and a SAFER tune than any power card/piggyback can.

With all that said I'd never beat anyone up for using a card/piggyback. I get the simplicity. Come to think of it I should sell mine. Maybe it'll fund my flares.

Got my 5XRacing Shifter rebuild kit yesterday installed. Diff, transmission and turret with Redline. Replaced the radiator- but got to the thermostat and had the dreader 'thermostat housing bolt break' Tried to extract it out, broke my extractor. Drilled it out oversized and am going to use a nut, bolt and lock washer. Thermoswitch for fan also fell apart.

Guess I was spoiled working on my lower mileage LE that had been pampered most of it's life. Never had any issues with fasteners or bolts breaking.

Cincycaddy

25th June 2017, 20:22

Got the new radiator, thermostat and thermoswitch in. Replaced the older Sony deck with a Bluetooth unit. Bipes timing controller arrived but am waiting on the FFS fuel card and ecu harness. BUT I did get the rockers painted today, SEM satin black. Used a previous tape line as a reference, and thought the black was too high (all my previous Miatas have been Black LEs) but by chance a couple of the local Forum members stopped by and compared to a red 94 w/ stock black rockers it's spot on.

Coming together - DDMworks radio surround and fuel card hopefully arrive this week - hope the install and setting goes smoothly.

Nice! You may find, once you've dialed in the fuel that you don't need to see that fuel card. I put mine in the glovebox, Velcro attached to the side.
AFR looks perfect, road test time.....

Yeah - had it up there for initial run to verify it was at least seeing boost.

So far that is the case. I can't imagine going back to a non FI 1.6.

Ordered an idle air bypass hose relocation kit from TDR. Got tired of looking at that damn 3/4" hose draped across the front of the engine.

Lastly I worked up a temporary solution for the Norm Garret idle droop fix that had apparently been installed and then disconnected. For now I installed a small K&N filter and a ball valve to allow just enough extra unmetered air to keep from getting idle droop/stalling and bring the AFR down to around 15.5. Hopefully I can get things dialed in so that the fix is either implemented with the extra metered air or the port on the intake capped off.

In the process of installing a keyless entry alarm with trunk release and trunk light. Ordered a mercury switch and trunk release solenoid and then stumbled across that the NB trunk release with motor and microswitch will bolt right in. For $29 shipped on eBay it was a great was to easily add the power trunk release and trunk switch for turning on the trunk light and triggering the alarm system.

Picked up a set of GE Nighthawk LED 7" headlamps. The light output compared to the stock lamps is incredible. Scored at a great price through Amazon. They look pretty goofy compared to stock lamps but that's a small price to pay.

Plug and play or did you have to upgrade the harness? Model Number? How's that boost working for you?

Plug and play. Didn't look at the current draw but being LED I don't suspect they draw any more current than the old sealed beams.

https://www.amazon.com/GE-NIGHTHAWK-Round-Replacement-Headlamp/dp/B00BQX2BT8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500905791&sr=8-1&keywords=GE+NIGHTHAWK+7+LED

Haven'd driven her much in the past week as I finished the alarm/keyless/door lock install but happily drove her to work today. Still loving the boost. :)

Picked them up as an Amazon Warehouse Deal for about half price. Had trouble pulling the trigger at $124 a piece. Could never justify $220/light.
